Important Technical Information

Registering a domain with Netlive

Without exception, unless otherwise stated via a special offer or otherwise, all domains must be paid for in full before any registration takes place. We do not register first and then send you an invoice. The same process applies to domain renewals each year, payment needs to be made before renewal date.

We are able to register most TLDs (top level domains) such as .com .net .info .mobi etc.
There are literally hundreds of TLDs available today and we have the ability to register most of these, however, some country based TLDs are limited to residents within that country only.
Our most common ones are .co.za .com .net .info .co.uk & .mobi

Ownership

Initially, when first registering, we use a registration template for convenience and speed. This makes Netlive the Initial owner.
However, if you are not comfortable with this arrangement, please say so and we will include your details as the registrant at the outset.
Either way, once paid for you will be the legal owner and can move or transfer your domain at any time by giving one calendar months’ notice.

Which Server?

We run several servers in Germany and South Africa.
You can choose, if you have a preference, to either host your site locally or in Europe, if this suits your business better.

Reasonable effort against hackers

We make every effort to prevent your website, domain and mailboxes from being hacked. We run scans and monitor traffic flows all day and night, however, because of the human factor, it’s virtually impossible to prevent every possible hack attempt.
Most hacks occur because of lax or weak password security or phishing emails.
We institute very strong password rules and it’s up to you to keep your password safe.

Should your services with us become compromised we will make every effort to mitigate the effects and warn you accordingly.
Certain processes will need to be followed, such as password resets, password strengthening, finding the source of the compromise and fixing it.

Notes about our email accounts

We offer POP and IMAP email accounts, both with or without SSL.
IMAP Accounts are billed at an extra cost per mailbox.

We highly recommend setting up POP accounts and maintaining your own backups because we DO NOT guarantee email backups as a service. We backup every server, every night and that backup is kept for 12 days, but it must be stressed that this is not a guarantee that your email is safely backed up.

Backing up your email is YOUR responsibility.

How POP and IMAP work:

Using a POP account, your email client (Like Outlook), would do and send and receive into our servers and download your emails, once done, it then removes the email from our server. Your email is now stored on your own machine where it’s easy to manage.

Using an IMAP Account, yor email client would do a SYNC into our servers, it would bring a copy of all your email to your computer as well as send any changes, such as sent items, new folders created etc. back up to our servers. A duplicate now exists on your email client and our server.

This sounds great, however, there are serious disadvantages to using IMAP, firstly, the more emails that get stored on the server the slower your sync will become. Secondly, if something goes wrong on our email server which may involve, say hardware replacement, your account on our server may be emptied out but because syncing works both ways, your email client will also be emptied out and you’ll lose all your email. Thirdly, using more storage space costs more, therefore IMAP accounts are billed at R207 per month per mailbox.

Making backups of POP accounts is really simple, which is why we recommend setting up your email accounts that way.
